Autumn 2011 Highlights

Hampton Academy Sports teams have a brand new vibrant image to represent the new look academy. A generous contribution from Hampton Academy Association and a remarkable donation from two students added to the previous funds raised from Hampton Academy staff and students to kit out the sports teams in impressive new sports uniforms. The modern and lively designs are exclusive to Hampton Academy and students Josh D and Shefali P, the students who donated their Jack Petchey award money, are proudly showing off the new shirts alongside other sporty students.

The momentum that Hampton Academy picked up in their inaugural year continued in the Autumn of 2011 and below are just a few highlights of a hugely successful term of sport.

The headline story for the term has to be the Hampton Academy football teams. The academy staff threw their weight behind the footballers, even attracting Mr Byrne from the Maths dept. to coach the Y9 boy’s team. Mr Blount and Mr Mayfield dedicated themselves to Y7 and Y8 fixtures but Mr Crossan again lead the way by navigating the Y10/11 team all the way through an unbeaten season and to the Grand Final showdown against Richmond Park Academy at Hampton and Richmond Borough FC under floodlights. Our boys picked up the silver medal on that occasion but made the entire academy proud in front of hundreds of supporters. It was not only the boys that had an unbeaten football season, Ms Davidson and our Y7/8 girls topped their league and will now aim to go one better than the boys in their Grand Final against Grey Court in the New Year. Good luck girls.

Mr Mayfield had his sights set firmly on silverware in the boys KS4 Volleyball and successfully managed to win the Richmond Borough Championship. Our lads went one step further than last year’s silver to prove that Volleyball success at Hampton Academy is no fluke. Congratulations to our Y10/11 boys who will progress to the regional stage of the competition.

Ms Nuttall and Ms Horsburgh coached the Y9 and Y10/11 Netballers through a gruelling schedule and fixtures against every other school in Richmond. Our girls improved out of sight throughout the course of the year and the Y9s even reached the Borough semi-finals. Ms Horsburgh also nurtured the academy Y7/8 Hockey team through a full season of fixtures.

Mr Blount marked his arrival at Hampton Academy by creating a Football and Basketball team for the brand new Y7 boys, but it was his Y7 Rugby team that were most impressive. Mr Giblin and Mr Blount created a regular Rugby training for Y7,8,9 and 10 and continued to develop the Weight Lifting club for the KS4 boys

Introducing Mrs Day and Mrs Dyatt! These two committed staff members developed their Friday night Badminton club that was full to capacity every week of the autumn term. The club proved that it was not just about recreation as Ms Day produced a KS3 boy’s team that came overall second in the Richmond Borough competition. The club ran so well that the Richmond SSP decided to make it the Richmond Change4Life Badminton club. Well done everyone who made this such a successful club.

The Academy also competed in the Borough Cross-Country championship, Y9 Basketball, Y7 Sports Hall Athletics, and boys 6-a-side tournaments. With such a huge demand on the academy staff for sports fixture and competitions, the PE staff would like to recognise the contribution of Mrs Clark who drove the minibus and single-handedly enabled half a dozen fixtures go ahead. Thanks also go to the premises team that assisted in fulfilling fixtures.
As a footnote, the Y10/11 students controversially beat the Hampton Academy staff in a Comic Relief charity Volleyball match. The staff will undoubtedly be exacting their revenge on the students in the Staff v Students Football match at the end of term.

Congratulations to all students that represented Hampton Academy in the Autumn. The standard and expectation continues to rise. Finally, a special thank you goes to all the dedicated Hampton Academy PE staff and teachers from other departments that made these fantastic successes possible.

Hampton Academy Brand New Sports Kit

The new look Hampton Academy have celebrated their recent sporting successes by unveiling their brand new bespoke sports kits. The original designs are exclusive to Hampton Academy and will make students even more proud to represent their school in sports fixtures and competitions.
Funds were raised by students and staff from the Olympic Learning day in March 2010 and from a generous donation from Hampton Academy Association in the summer term. Students Josh Dillon and Shefali Pandhi even donated their own Jack Petchey prize money towards the kits. These generous student contributions were recognised by having the students’ names added to the sleeves of the Rugby and Netball shirts.
Below is a picture of the sports kits modelled by a selection of Hampton Academy’s most successful students. At the front: Josh and Shefali, proudly showing off their shirts.
Mr Giblin who organised the fund raiser events for the kit and oversaw its production had this to say, “Thank you to everyone who contributed to the funds, especially Josh, Shefali and Hampton Academy Association. It’s a great honour to represent your school in sports competitions and now Hampton Academy students have sports kit that they can be proud to wear.”

Netballers Reach the Richmond Schools Semi Final

On Tuesday the 6th of December Hampton Academy took part in the bough netball tournament. Hampton were lucky enough to host the tournament and lots of schools from the surrounding area including; LEH, Teddington, Orleans Park School, Grey Court and Richmond Park Academy came to compete.

The competition was tough but Hampton Academy managed to win both their opening games against Orleans Park School and Grey Court, 5-2 and 2-0 respectively.

It was a freezing cold evening and we were struggling to keep warm but our excitement was keeping us going!! The word was in, we were through to the semi finals! The team played hard but unfortunately Teddington's shooting was exceptional! Hampton Academy lost the match 5-1.

All was not lost however! We were into the 3rd and 4th place playoffs in a match against LEH 'A'. I saw a superb effort from Hampton Academy the marking was second to none and the team continued to create opportunities on the attack. Sophie Berry, later named Hampton Academy's player of the tournament, notched up another two goals but alas it wasn't enough, the final score... Hampton Academy 2 - LEH 4.

Over all we were placed 4th, not too shoddy considering the amount of teams and the strength of the competition! I couldn't be prouder of the year 9 netball team!

Jasmeen Bajwa, Sophie Berry, Hollie Cronin, Courtney Haynes, Paige Halloran, Shefali Pandi, Danielle Rooney, Maisie Sellwood.

HA V Orleans Park School - 5-2

HA V Grey Court 2-0
Teddington v HA 5-1 (Semi's)
LEH (A) vs HA 4-2 (3/4 place play off)

Hampton Academy Year 7 Girls Tag Rugby

Sport is going from strength to strength at Hampton Academy and this time it was the turn of the girls to impress at Rugby. Our year 7 girls entered the Harlequins RL Tag Rugby competition on Friday 30 September 2011. The competition saw Hampton Academy face six other Richmond schools.

Our girls did fantastically well, winning two games against Twickenham Academy and drawing against Waldegrave, the eventual winners, in the final match of their pool. Our girls narrowly missed out on a spot in the grand final.

Mr Giblin, School Sport Coordinator, said ‘Our girls did themselves proud today. They represented Hampton Academy very well, and the fact that these girls are year 7 means we have some more sporting successes to look forward to in the future’. Well done girls!

Year 1: Starting Strong

Hampton Academy opened its door to students for the first time in September 2010 and it has been an action packed first year for the Hampton Academy Sports teams. The students were quick out of the blocks in year one, but saved the best ‘til last by winning the year 7&8 Richmond Borough Cricket league in the summer term. Mr Crossan guided the cricketers to the championship as well as coaching the Tennis team that placed third in the Borough festival. Well done to the boys year 8 Tennis team Harkaran Matharu-Randwwa and Matthew Bryant.
Alongside this, Hampton Academy competed in the Borough Athletics at Kingsmeadow and the girls completed a full season of Rounders. Mr Finch took a Hampton Academy team to the Richmond inclusive sports day, with two students being invited to a South London talent identification event. Congratulations to Isaac Prakash and Thomas Duncan for being selected.

However, arguably, the highlight of the Hampton Academy sporting calendar was the school sports day where Conrad college faced Wordsworth College for the lower school honours and the Kipling College students made an attempt on the school Athletics records. The winning teams were- 7CN; 8CO; 9WA and 10KM. Conrad College took the overall winners trophy on the day, much to the delight of Mr Collins and the other College staff. Although, not content to rest on his laurels, Mr Collins then led the charge in the staff relay event.

Throughout the rest of its debut year, the Academy notched up lots of other successes too. Hampton Academy entered the Richmond borough boys Football leagues at every age group in autumn 2010 and the headline success was the year 9 boys. The boys finished the North league championship with an unbeaten record and progressed to the borough Grand Final.

The Hampton Academy boy’s year 10 Volleyball team picked up in January, right where they left off in 2010. They competed in the South London Volleyball Championships after progressing through their pool and Borough final. The year 8 & 9 combined teams had to wait until after February half term to show off their Volleyball skills, and Mr Crossan’s girl’s Volleyball team proved they were up to the task by taking silver in the Richmond Borough Championship.

In the very same week, Mr Mayfield took the Key-Stage 3 Trampolining teams to the Richmond Festival and brought back the boy’s team gold. Well done to everyone that competed in the Borough Trampolining and congratulations to Thomas Goggin, Josh Dillon, Louie Grace and George Dietrich, who lifted the trophy. Boys and girls from the upper school both entered the local Badminton competitions, but it was Ms Nuttall’s girls that walked away with the silver medals. Well done to the girls Badminton players Mafuza Siddique, Holly Cronin, Danielle Rooney and Maisie Selwood.

Meanwhile, the year 7 and 8 boys Rugby League teams entered the Harlequins RL schools merit league, and Hampton Academy competed in competitive school Rugby fixtures for the first time. As Mr Giblin’s Rugby sessions went from strength to strength, the girl’s team got in on the action as well by entering the Richmond Champion Schools Competitions at year 7 and 9. Mr Giblin, took these complete novice girl’s teams and developed them to defend fiercely, score tries, compete and win games. Hampton Academy’s newly formed Rugby League players were so impressive that two boys players were Talent Identified by the RFL in Autumn and were invited to attend a talent training camp. Congratulations to Keegan Stewart and Harry Chapman. Additionally, over a dozen more boys were invited to join local Rugby League club- Richmond Warriors and the entire girls squad were invited to join the local girls team- West London Jets.

Aside from the sports fields, Hampton Academy had lots of new sports clubs for students in the spring term. Brentford FC delivered Futsal and Boxercise classes, year 10 boys began a weight lifting club and for the first time, Hampton Academy offered a Karate club for students interested in martial arts. Mrs Day also launched her Friday night Badminton club. Additionally, all students from all of the surrounding primary schools were invited to sports events at Hampton Academy, to check out the impressive facilities for themselves and play sports fixtures against their rival schools. Look out for more primary school activity around the Academy in the future.
Hampton Academy was one of the first schools in the Richmond Borough to join the Olympic Get Set network and again led the way with the Olympic celebrations. Izzy Humphrey and Matthew Gibson were nominated to be the Olympic Ambassadors for the Academy. They created an Olympic Hub at Hampton Academy, met Lord Seb Coe and visited the Olympic Site. Students and staff also held an Olympic Learning day and were allowed to come to school in a sports themed uniform and took part in some sporting challenges to raise funds for their very own sports kits. Hampton Academy also invited two local GB athletes to challenge students and raise awareness of the academy’s link to the 2012 Olympics.

The pride in sport at Hampton Academy was so great, that three students contributed their Jack Petchey prize money towards the kit fund. These funds, along with a very generous contribution from Hampton Academy Association, allowed Hampton Academy to purchase our very own sports kits for the new school sport season. Josh Dillon, Shefali Pandhi and Charlotte Gildersleve will have their initials on the shirts to recognise their valuable contribution.

Congratulations to all students that represented Hampton Academy in our first year. The bar has been set high for future years to improve upon. Finally, a special thank you goes to all the dedicated Hampton Academy PE staff and teachers from other departments that made these fantastic successes possible.

Wimbledon ladies title 2011

Petra Kvitova wins Wimbledon ladies title 2011

Martina Navratilova, the greatest of Wimbledon's women's champions, had tipped her compatriot and fellow left-hander Petra Kvitova to cause an upset in the ladies' singles final at the 125th Championships, and the Czech duly and excitingly obliged, obliterating the ambitions of a second Wimbledon win for the hot favourite Maria Sharapova - and in straight sets, too.
Kvitova won 6-3, 6-4 in one hour 25 minutes and though Sharapova's play fell well below her best levels, it was in no small part due to the big-hitting torrent directed at her by the 21-year-old whose first, but surely not last, Grand Slam victory this was. She has compared her own power tennis to that of the 2009 US Open winner Juan Martin del Potro and it seemed she certainly has a point.
Kvitova now finds herself £1.1m better off and becomes the youngest champion since Sharapova herself lifted the Venus Rosewater Dish in 2004 at the age of 17.
In addition to Navratilova, there were eight other former ladies' singles champions in the Royal Box, gathered to watch what many in the capacity crowd considered would be a formality for the 24-year-old Sharapova. The Russian promptly reinforced those opinions by breaking in the opening game on a pair of Kvitova forehand errors and a rasping forehand rocket of her own.
But the Czech, wearing a plaster on her right thigh as she had done throughout the fortnight, responded bravely and aggressively - an attitude she was to keep up from start to finish - to break back and it was quickly apparent that Sharapova would need to dig very deep indeed if she was to weather the hard-hitting and bigger-serving Kvitova.
To add to her woes, double faults began to creep into the Sharapova game but early on in the battle the Czech's tendency to over-hit was enough to keep Sharapova in with a good shout, or more accurately a shriek, of her second Wimbledon title. However, she was sometimes reduced to groans as she stretched for deep bullet returns that were giving Kvitova more confidence with every passing minute on Centre Court.
The second, and crucial, break of the Sharapova serve came in the sixth game, a self-inflicted disaster on the back of a brace of double faults. It meant that she spent longer than usual communing with the back stop in her trademark moments of meditation between points, even if that routine did not seem to help her come up with the winning game plan.
It was The Day of the Sluggers and Kvitova proved to be the champion at this. She held for 5-3 at a cost of one point, was denied a set point on the Sharapova serve by a Russian ace, but then served out confidently to love for the first set in 40 minutes. Sharapova's unforced error count already stood at nine.
The Czech momentum was maintained as she broke at the start of the second set with a stunning forehand which clipped the baseline. Kvitova the developed a touch of the jitters - two double faults creeping in at this make-or-break stage - but gathered her composure to put two first serves in and take a 2-0 lead.
The sight of her big day rapidly turning to ashes motivated a Sharapova counter-attack and she pulled level, a little fortunately, when Kvitova failed to put away the simplest of smashes and the Russian lobbed her on break point.
The jubilation among the Sharapova-ites was brief. Missing three game points for a 3-2 lead proved costly as Kvitova slammed away another forehand service return winner to break the Russian serve for a fourth time. Back came Sharapova with a service break of her own to level once more at 3-3 and the Centre Court fans readied themselves for a Sharapova surge. It never came, and was never likely to, as Kvitova's intelligent serving - taking full advantage of her southpaw style - directed the ball into her opponent's body, restricting her opportunities to generate pace of her own on the return.
Another Kvitova break, following Sharapova's sixth double fault, put her ahead once more and all she needed from there was to make sure she did not lose confidence in her service action. When the time came to serve for the title, her first Slam, there was no faltering. She won it to love with her first ace of the match, a rocket down the middle, and knelt in disbelief on the baseline before rising to acknowledge the acclaim. After Navratilova, and more recently Jana Novotna, the Czechs have another worthy ladies' singles champion at Wimbledon.

Borough Sports 2011

Well done to Hampton Academys athletics team!

On Tuesday a 57 strong team of Hampton Academys year 7, 8 and 9's headed to the anual borough sports event. The event was this year heald at Kingsmeddow and was attened by all schools in the brough including our sister school Twickenham Academy and the reinging champions Orleans Park School.

It was a fantastic day where 6 borough records were broken and the weather was unusualy sunny all afternoon! Although we didnt win it was great to see so many of our students putting in a tremendous amount of effort and taking part with such focus.

Congratulations to Orleans Park School, 2011 winners.
