Hampton Academy Sports teams have a brand new vibrant image to represent the new look academy. A generous contribution from Hampton Academy Association and a remarkable donation from two students added to the previous funds raised from Hampton Academy staff and students to kit out the sports teams in impressive new sports uniforms. The modern and lively designs are exclusive to Hampton Academy and students Josh D and Shefali P, the students who donated their Jack Petchey award money, are proudly showing off the new shirts alongside other sporty students.
The momentum that Hampton Academy picked up in their inaugural year continued in the Autumn of 2011 and below are just a few highlights of a hugely successful term of sport.
The headline story for the term has to be the Hampton Academy football teams. The academy staff threw their weight behind the footballers, even attracting Mr Byrne from the Maths dept. to coach the Y9 boy’s team. Mr Blount and Mr Mayfield dedicated themselves to Y7 and Y8 fixtures but Mr Crossan again lead the way by navigating the Y10/11 team all the way through an unbeaten season and to the Grand Final showdown against Richmond Park Academy at Hampton and Richmond Borough FC under floodlights. Our boys picked up the silver medal on that occasion but made the entire academy proud in front of hundreds of supporters. It was not only the boys that had an unbeaten football season, Ms Davidson and our Y7/8 girls topped their league and will now aim to go one better than the boys in their Grand Final against Grey Court in the New Year. Good luck girls.
Mr Mayfield had his sights set firmly on silverware in the boys KS4 Volleyball and successfully managed to win the Richmond Borough Championship. Our lads went one step further than last year’s silver to prove that Volleyball success at Hampton Academy is no fluke. Congratulations to our Y10/11 boys who will progress to the regional stage of the competition.
Ms Nuttall and Ms Horsburgh coached the Y9 and Y10/11 Netballers through a gruelling schedule and fixtures against every other school in Richmond. Our girls improved out of sight throughout the course of the year and the Y9s even reached the Borough semi-finals. Ms Horsburgh also nurtured the academy Y7/8 Hockey team through a full season of fixtures.
Mr Blount marked his arrival at Hampton Academy by creating a Football and Basketball team for the brand new Y7 boys, but it was his Y7 Rugby team that were most impressive. Mr Giblin and Mr Blount created a regular Rugby training for Y7,8,9 and 10 and continued to develop the Weight Lifting club for the KS4 boys
Introducing Mrs Day and Mrs Dyatt! These two committed staff members developed their Friday night Badminton club that was full to capacity every week of the autumn term. The club proved that it was not just about recreation as Ms Day produced a KS3 boy’s team that came overall second in the Richmond Borough competition. The club ran so well that the Richmond SSP decided to make it the Richmond Change4Life Badminton club. Well done everyone who made this such a successful club.
The Academy also competed in the Borough Cross-Country championship, Y9 Basketball, Y7 Sports Hall Athletics, and boys 6-a-side tournaments. With such a huge demand on the academy staff for sports fixture and competitions, the PE staff would like to recognise the contribution of Mrs Clark who drove the minibus and single-handedly enabled half a dozen fixtures go ahead. Thanks also go to the premises team that assisted in fulfilling fixtures.
As a footnote, the Y10/11 students controversially beat the Hampton Academy staff in a Comic Relief charity Volleyball match. The staff will undoubtedly be exacting their revenge on the students in the Staff v Students Football match at the end of term.
Congratulations to all students that represented Hampton Academy in the Autumn. The standard and expectation continues to rise. Finally, a special thank you goes to all the dedicated Hampton Academy PE staff and teachers from other departments that made these fantastic successes possible.
