Hampton Academy- Year 3 Primary School Sports Day

Hampton Academy celebrated a hugely successful Primary School Sports Day which involved over 150 children last Friday. The event was hosted by Hampton Academy and every single year 3 students from surrounding primary schools were invited to take part in the afternoon of sport fixtures and fun activities.

For the first time ever, Hampton Hill, Hampton Juniors and Buckingham Primary came together to participate in inter-schools sports fixtures at one venue. Hampton Academy School Sport Coordinator Jimmy Giblin organised the event to allow every single child the opportunity to represent their school in a competitive fixture, whilst having fun and finding out more about student life in a secondary school.

The youngsters played Tag Rugby fixtures against teams from other schools. Harlequins RL coaches were on hand to support the event and referee the fixtures, which enabled every child the opportunity to compete for their school. Darren Pugsley, Harlequins RL Development Officer was fantastic in running fixtures and engaging all year 3 students. Every child was also invited to join the local Rugby League club, the Richmond Warriors.

When teams were not on the field, they were participating in fun activities lead by Hampton Academy students. These young leaders also held Q&A sessions and helped guide the year 3s around the sport facilities. Jimmy (as he’s known to the year 3s) or Mr Giblin (as he’s known to Hampton Academy students) led tours of the Academy for the primary school children, teachers and parents. The children had the opportunity to see the sport hall, gymnasium, fitness suite, changing rooms, sports fields and got chance to see a range of sporting activity sessions at break time and in PE lessons. The youngsters met PE staff Mr Mayfield and Ms Davidson and got chance to quiz Head of PE Ms Nuttall in the corridors at lunch time.

Leading up to Friday, the sheer scale of the proposed event was a terrifying thought, but Jimmy Giblin recruited an army of 16 young leaders from Btec (year 10) course. The masses of primary school children were split up in to 16 teams and the young leaders acted as captain, ambassador and guide for one team each for the entire day. “The leaders did an amazing job, and today would not have been possible without the help of our Hampton Academy students,” Mr Giblin commented, “Everyone has had a brilliant experience at Hampton Academy and it’s credit to the young leaders.”

Mr Giblin would like to thank the school sport partnership for helping to organise the day. Thanks also to Darren and Harlequins RL for helping run the fixtures on the day. The real praise should go to the young leaders who were great role models and inspiring ambassadors. The day would not have been as successful without them.

The final thanks goes to the year 3 teachers from Hampton Hill, Hampton Juniors and Buckingham Primary who walked the 16 teams over for the fun filled fixture afternoon. A full list of teams (named by the class children themselves) can be seen below,
