Comic Relief Staff v Student 2011

Over two days staff and students battled it out across three disciplines; Volleyball, Netball and Football. The effort and commitment put in by all teams provided a very competitive dual one which pupils of Hampton Academy had the privilege of seeing for just a small donation to Comic Relief.
On Thursday the 17th of March at lunch time the Volleyball teams came head to head. Nerves began to rise as spectators filled in and the first serve was taken. The closely fought game lasted the entire lunch with neither team wanting to stop. There was some great serving from team captain Miss Glendening and even a surprise appearance from Mr Edmead. Both teams played superbly and the sets were very close but as the final serve was taken the staff were crowned victorious 2 sets to 0.

It was 1:0 to the staff after the first battle with just netball and football to go...
The next day, Friday the 18th, the sports hall was once again filled with expectant spectators. The atmosphere was electric and the match set off at a blistering pace, as the match continued clashes between the staff and students became rougher in a bid to win. The students were on top form though (obviously well taught!) and managed to score point after point. The staff just couldn’t contend and at the end of a fiercely fought  and exhausting 14 minutes the students stormed to victory 7-1. A special thank you and congratulations goes to Migena Dollani, who created, organised and coached the students team, well done!!

All was square in the Staff vs Students war, one a piece...it all came down to the football.

Comic Relief Staff v Student Football match review
By Andrew Harries 7WT
This was to be very exciting game where every single pass and shot counted as it went down to the wire. It was cold; muddy and very entertaining. The fans were ready.  The game was to be half an hour each way. The ref (Mr Humphreys) and the teams started the game with very high morale.  In the early parts of the first half the students dominated with most of the possession and lots of chances but an on form Mr Mayfield kept denying the student chances but there were signs of the staff getting to grips with the game. After about 10 minutes Billy (one of the mentors in the arts and performance) committed a foul that earned him a ticking off from the referee, from the first half was not much football but a lot of substitutions for the staff by Miss Nuttall who was the manager of the Staff however there was no manager for the students. The half time whistle signalled the end of the first half which gave both teams to swap goalies have a drink and sort out some tactics for the second half. The teams were refreshed after a short break and raring to go. Shortly into the second half... “here’s Mr Chiremba on the ball there’s two defenders marking him, he shoots and scores!”... “First blood to the staff!” That annoyed the students a bit. On the return...“It’s Tyler the student captain on the run, good dribbling skills brought down...PENALTY!!!”... “Can the students peg it back here?”... “Tyler steps up to take and scores!” Now if you thought the students were annoyed when they conceded you should have seen the staffs faces, not the happiest of bunches then. So the two teams slaughtered on with lots of chances but lots of misses as well. At the end of full time there was nothing to separate the two teams at the end of normal time. So the game had to carry on into extra time, with 5 minutes each way. I heard that if the staff didn’t score that Miss Nuttall was going to come on to, well hopefully, seal victory. In the first half of extra time there were no goals and not much play. The second half came and three minutes in “here’s Ricky good dribble shoots... oh my goodness me!”... “What a goal from what 30 metres from goal, which will really put a nail in the staff’s hearts” But now the question was could the staff have a comeback. The answer was well, no. It was the students’ victory! It wasn’t the best game in the history of football, but by heck was it a good one.

So to round up...Thursday and Friday saw some brilliant competitive action and it was fantastic to have so many people involved, staff and students both playing and spectating. YES the students won (sigh) and us staff are slightly devastated BUT what keeps us going is knowing that everyone’s efforts managed to raise over £130 for comic relief. An extremely worthy cause that the PE Department, sports teams and our benevolent teachers of Hampton academy are proud to support!

Miss Davidson.

Hampton Academy Olympic Learning Day

Tuesday 15th March 2011

In a week that Lord Sebastian Coe and Mayor Boris Johnson led celebrations of 500 days until the London 2012 Olympics, Hampton Academy held their own celebrations to welcome this monumental landmark. On Tuesday 15th March 2011, Hampton Academy marked 500 days to go with a whole school Olympic Learning Day!

Hampton Academy was one of the first schools in the Richmond Borough to join the Olympic Get Set network and again led the way with the Olympic celebrations. Students and staff were allowed to come to school in a sports themed uniform and took part in some sporting challenges to raise funds for their very own sports kits. Hampton Academy also invited two local GB athletes to challenge students and raise awareness of the academy’s link to the 2012 Olympics.

GB 400m athlete Ainsley Campbell and GB swimmer Felix Samuels met students, signed autographs and for one afternoon, turned to Netball shooting, Sprinting, Long Jump and Football penalty shootouts as Hampton Academy students aimed to beat a British Olympian.

It was not just the students that got in to the spirit to celebrate the 2012 Olympics, but the staff arrived in school wearing their favourite retro sportswear. Mr Finch and Mr Scruby wore their favourite football tops from yester-year, while Ms Nuttall and Ms Davidson led the fashion parade in some classic Rugby and Basketball gear. However, surely nothing could surpass Mr Mayfield in an old skool sprint suit. A fantastic effort from all staff, lets hope it’s at least another 500 days until we see the likes of this again.

The London 2012 Olympics will be the biggest ever sporting event in history and we really are lucky to have them right on our doorstep in less that 500 days time. Thank you to everyone who got involved and took part to help celebrate such an important landmark in British sporting history.

Mr Giblins Blog...

Our squad met and flew out of Dublin airport on Tuesday morning. The flight was 7 and a quarter hours straight through to Philadelphia. As soon as we landed we were whisked straight over to our hotel for the night. As soon as we checked in, we were given the rest of the evening off, so everyone decided to have a team meal and head in to checkout downtown Philadelphia.

The time difference is 4 hours behind. So after we landed everyone felt exhausted even the though our watches said it was still only early evening. The excitement of being in a new city helped us hold off the tiredness for a couple of hours. I've been to the states plenty of times before, but it always hits me how big and bold it is. There's so much to take in.

Wednesday morning the tour really kicked off. We were taken to the crown plaza over the border in new jersey to check in for the rest of our stay. This place is really impressive. But just as we thought we'd have this swanky hotel all to ourselves, the USA squad began to arrive and check in. I've stayed in the same place as opponents before and the atmosphere can get really tense in the build up to the game. Rugby league is not the kind of sport that you hold grudges and you can guarantee that after the full-time whistle, we'll all be good mates, but it's just human nature to separate yourselves from your rivals and weigh up your opposite number.

We haven't learned anything new about the USA squad. We knew that they would be big physical and athletic; and we knew that we would have to play faster and smarter to beat them... But my god, these blokes are huge. It will be a real David and Goliath battle, but we've been preparing for that for months.

Yesterday was the formal welcome for both squads. We were driven to city hall to meet the mayor of philadelphia and the councillors. It was a great big event with media and photo opportunities. The whole city seemed to be celebrating St Patricks day. There were green banners and Irish flags everywhere. Business men were wearing green ties and everyone we spoke to seemed to have some proud Irish connection. It was very welcoming and it was amazing to be part of. Meanwhile, the ireland captain brendan guilfoyle and another member of our squad Ross bergin went over to the NBC studios to be filmed for their10 show (like itv this morning). Two of the USA players were there too to promote the game on St Patricks day. The media even came down to watch us train, taking photos of practice and interviewing the coaches.

It didn't stop there. We had a promo event on St Patricks day evening with both squads for the sponsors. The streets and bars were packed with people celebrating St Patricks day and we were the centre of attention anywhere we went. It was probably something to do with our green and black team tracksuits- no one could miss us. Needless to say both squads kept themselves very separate. And the atmosphere was abit edgy at times but it's time for us to concentrate on preparations for the test match on Saturday.

I still haven't ran up the rocky steps singing 'eye of the tiger'... Yet
