A diligent effort from our year 9 football team

 

The year 9 football grand final was held on Tuesday 14th December following lots of delays due to the recent wintry weather.   Hampton Academy and Grey Court had both won their respective leagues to warrant their place in the final which started with both teams vying to get a foothold in the game...   Things started well for Hampton Academy with Harry Chapman putting us 1-0 up with a cool finish. By half time Hampton could have been 3-0 up, but Harry Chapman was denied twice by fantastic saves from the Grey Court keeper. Grey Court came back strongly and only some great defending from our back five of Alex Smithers, Adam Saidi, George Mckillop, Caolan Humphries and Conagh Nee kept the score at 1-0 Hampton.   The second half kicked off with Hampton looking to double their advantage which they soon did. The move started with a great ball down the line from Adam Saidi which was collected By Harry Chapman who shrugged off the attentions of two defenders before slotting home. 2-0 Hampton!   Grey court then began to press hard and within the space of 10 minutes the score was 2-2 due to some neat passing and moving from the opposition. Our goalkeeper Alex Smithers had little chance with both goals, such was the quality of the finishes.   A tense final period ensued with the defence being supported by the midfield and forwards - Zak Mekki, Adam Farrell, Josh Dillon, Max Jackson, Sahal Farhaan, Haris Jaganjac and Karim Mansouri.   Unfortunately Hampton were undone again with minutes to go. Grey Court burst through the centre of our midfield and after some good play the ball ended up nestling in the back of the Hampton net. 3-2.   A frantic scramble followed in the dying minutes with Hampton piling on the pressure. The Grey Court keeper again kept them in the lead with some terrific saves and Alex Smithers kept the score at 3-2 with some great work in the Hampton goal.   As the final whistle blew the disappointment was obvious. However, the Hampton Academy team were gracious in defeat and congratulated their opposition and thanked the referee.   A great performance on the whole - despite the outcome not being in our favour. The team will be back next year as a combined year 10/11 group looking to go one better and secure the trophy for the Hampton cabinet.... Mr S. Crossan, Teacher of P.E.

Jockey Tony McCoy wins Sports Personality of the Year

Grand National winner Tony McCoy has been voted the 2010 BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

The 36-year-old has been the champion jump jockey 15 times and becomes the first rider to win the BBC award after claiming 41.98% of the vote.

"To win this award is surreal," said McCoy, who won the Grand National in April at the 15th attempt.

Darts player Phil Taylor came second, while heptathlete Jessica Ennis finished in third.

Northern Irishman McCoy, who has sustained numerous injuries during his stellar career, won the Grand National at Aintree for the first time in 2010 on Don't Push It.

Devon teenage diver Tom Daley has been awarded the BBC Young Sports Personality title for the third time.

The 16-year-old became the second youngest-ever double Commonwealth champion in Delhi, winning the 10m individual and synchro competitions.
Daley beat Olympic champion Matt Mitcham to win the individual contest and easily took the synchro title alongside diving partner Max Brick.
The world champion also won the Young Personality crown in 2007 and 2009.
"This comes very unexpected, I've got so many people to thank," he said when accepting the award.
"I'd like to thank my family, grandparents, Max Brick my diving partner, and my strength and conditioning coaches.
"It's been a tough year but to go to the Commonwealth Games as my main event of the year, I was very happy to come away with two gold medals so thank you very much."

Former England captain David Beckham has received the BBC Sports Personality Lifetime Achievement award.

The 35-year-old midfielder is England's most capped outfield player and won six Premier League titles and the Champions League crown with Manchester United.
He won the Spanish league with Real Madrid after a £25m move from United before joining Los Angeles Galaxy and also spent two loan spells at AC Milan.
In 2001 Beckham was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
"I'm humbled to receive an award for something I love doing and continue to love doing, [I am] very humbled," said a tearful Beckham, who accepted the award from Sir Bobby Charlton.

Sports Personality Of The Year

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year top-10 shortlist has been revealed.

It features jockey AP McCoy, golfers Lee Westwood and Graeme McDowell, darts legend Phil Taylor and diver Tom Daley.

Winter Olympic gold medallist Amy Williams is also included, along with heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis and England cricketer Graeme Swann.

Boxing's world heavyweight champion David Haye and cycling sprint sensation Mark Cavendish make up the top 10 contenders for 2010.

The nominees will be put to a public vote on the night of the live show, which will be broadcast from the LG Arena in Birmingham at 1900 GMT, Sunday 19 December on BBC One.

The public will be able to choose who they want to see crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year by telephone and details of the numbers to phone will be given out during the programme, which will be presented by Sue Barker, Gary Lineker and Jake Humphrey.

As well as this 2010 BBC Young Sports Personality Of The Year will be decided from the top three who are Double Commonwealth Games diving champion Tom Daley (16), Commonwealth weightlifting bronze-medallist Zoe Smith (17) and World Junior 100m champion Jodie Williams (17).

New handball club starting

The following pupils have been selected to take part in an exclusive Handball Session at Hampton Academy. One of our talented year 9 students has offered to run a Handball club on a Tuesday lunch time for the selected girls. The sessions aim to teach students how to play the game and coach some of the basic skills. The sessions will be fun, friendly and active.

Home grown talent!

Introducing Hampton Academy's newest sport stars; Harry Chapman and Keegan Stewart. These bright young stars have been identified as talented athletes from the recent schools Rugby League competitions. Hampton Academy entered the 2010 Richmond rounds of the Champion Schools Competition at year 9 and 7 in November and competed against all the other borough schools for the Rugby League championship. Harlequins Rugby League hosted the competition and the Rugby Football League (RFL) talent scouts were present to identify the most talented players with the biggest potential and invite them back to a talent training centre to see more of their skills and help them develop.

Despite few training sessions, the Hampton Academy lads put in some superb performances to catch the selectors' attention in the Rugby League matches. Harry, year 9 and Keegan, year 7, will now attend a talent session where the best coaches from the region will aim to develop their skills even more.

Jimmy Giblin, Hampton Academy School Sport Coordinator (SSCo) and Rugby League coach said, 'Congratulations to Harry and Keegan. I am so pleased for the two lads who have been selected and I am tremendously proud of all the boys who have played Rugby League this year. It is a team sport, and everyone performed supremely well together. This is just the tip of the ice berg, and it really shows how much sporting talent we have here at Hampton Academy. After a full season of training and playing fixtures, I fully expect Harry and Keegan to be joined by dozens more Hampton Academy students in the near future.'

Claire Allan
London-born Claire has represented England at six levels, U18, U19, Academy, A, Sevens and seniors, for whom she has won 20 caps and scored nine tries, with her overseas CV including Sevens in Rome, Amsterdam, San Diego, Dubai, her favourite ground, and Germany. She said: “My positive memory is beating the Black Ferns in Amsterdam in 2008 with a downside of losing to Australia in the IRB World Cup Sevens last year.”

Hannah Beharry

Determined to challenge her critics, she demonstrated the passion and ability to compete as a serious contender in amateur boxing and has since achieved status as one of the top female boxers in the UK.

At 23, she has taken control of her life and is not only aiming for gold but acting as a strong role model for local communities by promoting boxing in schools

Claire Bennett

A full-time fencer for Great Britain, with the aim of qualifying for the 2012 Olympic Games. Claire is also an aspiring journalist who has already written for The Telegraph and the Evening Standard.

BTEC PE Year 10 Dodgeball tournament success!

Pupils taking BTEC PE last week organised and held a dodgeball tournament for year 7 Wordsworth students.

Pupils entered several teams and tried out a new type of dogeball game where players had to start by collecting the ball's from the back of the court.

The year 7's played fantastically and showed great skill, the year 10's showed maturity and keen organisational skills to pull off such a brilliant tournament. The event was a great achievement for both year groups!!
